Gerald Appelstein
Jerry has been involved in the oil business since his graduation from MIT where he majored in chemical engineering with minors in English literature and economics. Since then, he has worked for Exxon and Starsupply GFI, and lastly as a VP at Tauber Oil Company as an international physical oil trader. In December 2014, he retired and is now President of Applehouse LLC, which is involved in angel investor and venture capital funding initiatives.
Jerry has extensive involvement with MIT in leadership and volunteer roles. He was a 15 year member of the Corporation Development Committee, and just completed his three-year term as Vice-President on the MIT Alumni Association Board of Directors. He now serves on the esteemed Awards Committee responsible for recognizing the very best among the MIT alumni/ae population. In 2015, he was himself honored with MIT’s highest honor, recognizing lifetime achievement in support of the Institute.
Dance is a major part of Jerry’s extracurricular life. He is the past Chairman of the Board of Complexions Contemporary Ballet and is also a past Trustee and Head of the Development Subcommittee of the Joyce Theater in NYC. He currently provides philanthropic and/or advisory support to, Parson, , Stephen Petronio, Jessica Lang, Jody Oberfelder, Robin Decker, Pam Tanowitz, Bryn Cohn, Periapsis, Arch Ballet while also serving as Board President of Alison Cook-Beatty Dance, keeping his fingers on the pulse of this vibrant contemporary art form. In 2012, he was honored by the Career Transitions for Dance organization with a lifetime achievement award in support of the dance community. In other arts areas, he is past executive committee trustee member of the NJ Symphony Orchestra. He also supports the Broadway Cares organization and is a trustee here locally of the Skyline Theatre Company, which makes its performance home in Fairlawn, NJ.
Jerry has two children, Jessica and Janna, aged thirty-three and twenty-eight, respectively. Jessica has a Masters Degree in fashion at FIT and is an adjunct Professor of Fashion at Manhattan Marymount while also pursuing a fashion career as founding partner of Voice of Insiders. Janna, after having started her own successful jewelry company, Eye of Ja, recently graduated from Ramapo College, and is currently pursuing her doctorate in clinical psychology at LIU Brooklyn.
